FILE EXTENSION NOTES

File extension is usually three or more characters at the end of the computer file name. File extensions are useful for computer operating systems, such as Windows, Mac, or OSX. It tells the operating system what kind of data file it is and which application it is associated with.
Have you ever worked on a paper at home, brought it to school and it won’t open? If so, your problem may have been compatibility between programs. For example if you have a basic Work word processing program at home it’s not compatible with MS Word unless it’s saved properly.
For Example: .doc, .docx are both MS Word files. Doc is version 97-2003 and docx is 2007-2010. In Word you can save a document with several different file types. If you have 2010 at home and bring a file to school – it won’t open in our 2007 version unless it has a “patch” installed or you saved it as a different file type.
Rich Text File – save a document that anoyone can open and edit even if the don’t have the Word program on their computer or the same version. Advance formatting features are not saved.
Plain Text - .txt save a document that anyone can open and edit even if the don’t have the Word program on their computer – no formatting is saved.
A .pdf is a document graphic file – for example in Word you can save a document as a pdf – others can open the document, but can’t alter it. You need an Adobe Reader to read the document – Adobe Reader is a free download.
.html is a web page file
